Jumpstart into Pre-K
We can’t wait for our little antlers to join us in August! This information is designed to help get your child ready for Pre-K.
Four Steps to Jumpstart into Pre-K
There are 4 important steps you can implement now and practice during the summer that will really help your child get ready for Pre-K in August!
- Students enrolling in Pre-K are expected to take care of all toileting needs independently with the exception of children eligible for special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Act or Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
-
Please practice independent toileting, cleaning up, and handwashing with your child.
-
For our Pre-K boys, our bathrooms have urinals that are lower to the ground to accommodate students. Help them get adjusted to seeing and using a urinal in the restrooms.
-
Students will need to bring back-up clothes. Staff members do not assist students with toileting needs, and parents will be contacted if their child is requiring constant assistance. We understand that accidents happen, and we will assist students with clean-up and changing clothes when this occurs.
-
If your child still requires the use of pull-ups during the day, please work with him/her over these next few weeks to gain independence from pull-up use as these are classified as diapers, which means that your child has not met the independent toileting requirement of Pre-K.
-
Have your child practice carrying their own food, as they will be expected to carry their lunch tray and drink to their cafeteria table independently.
-
Please practice to gain independence with opening containers, eating without the use of electronics, remaining seated throughout the meal, using a soft voice, and eating lunch within 30 minutes.
-
Students that are not prepared for the school cafeteria experience will struggle compared to their peers that have practiced. We want all of our Pre-K students to be comfortable with mealtime independence at school.
-
Every class has a rest time for one hour each day. If your child naps, help your child get adjusted to a one hour nap after lunch time.
-
If your child does not nap, please get them used to laying down and having quiet time for one hour each day. Children who do not nap are allowed to look at books quietly, if necessary.
-
Due to time constraints, parents are not allowed to get their child in and out of their carseats while in the car line.
-
Please have your child practice doing so independently to save you time from having to pull forward in the parking lot.
Pre-K in Deer Creek follows a play-based model. So much learning happens through play! The learning environment for Pre-K focuses on social skills, emotional regulation and academics.
